TCTI Teacher Cohort

Do you need help getting new teachers settled in the classroom? Do you need resources to assist first year teachers as they work toward provisional certification from ACCS? The Classical Teaching Institute has a program that can help.

Many classical Christian school administrators are stretched thin and often lack the time to support new teachers as they navigate certification and classroom challenges. The TCTI Teacher Cohort is designed to fill that gap and to assist with ACCS provisional teacher certification by offering first-year teachers practical guidance, classical training, and support throughout the school year.

What does the Cohort offer?

The TCTI Teacher Cohort is a one-year program which supports young teachers by offering training in classical pedagogy and helping them gain provisional teacher certification in an ACCS-accredited school.

The program includes:

  • Monthly Zoom calls from September through April to discuss John Milton Gregory’s The Seven Laws of Teaching and Habits of the Household by Justin Whitmel Earley. Teachers will read these books in small portions and discuss them in a cohort led by Joshua Gibbs.

  • Monthly Zoom lectures (September through April) on classical pedagogy, classroom management, assessment, Socratic dialogues.

  • Assistance in writing and editing a response to John Milton Gregory’s The Seven Laws of Teaching.

  • Assistance in writing and editing a response to Habits of the Household by Justin Whitmel Earley.

  • Assistance in writing and editing a position paper on the author’s philosophy of classical Christian education.

  • Assistance in writing and editing a position paper on classical Christian pedagogy.

Cohort members will have shared access to a Canvas page where they can post questions about the classes they are teaching, lectures they are delivering, books they are reading, assessments they are giving, and receive prompt, individualized responses.

Upon satisfactorily completing the program, teachers will receive a certificate of completion.

Why is a Cohort necessary?

Many classical Christian administrators wear a dozen hats, which means they don’t have much time to give to teacher certification plans. As opposed to merely checking the boxes, The Classical Teaching Institute can help teachers:

  • Pace their certification work (so it isn’t rushed through in May)

  • Get more out of the time they put into certification work

  • Get face time with veteran teachers who can coach them through the process of writing strong, compelling statements on what they’re learning about classical education

  • Get support for all the many questions, concerns, and frustrations that come with the first year

Headmasters who enroll their teachers in the TCTI Teacher Cohort can be confident that young teachers are confidently completing their provisional certification, progressing in their grasp of classical pedagogy, and getting the help they need with their many little questions and concerns about the classroom.
